How to Become Global Class

Global Class is a new term coined by the authors Aaron McDaniel and Klaus Wehage to characterize the mindset and strategies of the world’s most successful companies. To familiarize yourself with what a Global Class company is all about, read through the traits and capabilities that these organizations have and benchmark yourself against it to become one yourself. 👇

 What are Global Class Companies?

Global Class Companies are organizations built for global scale, able to penetrate international markets and build strong customer-bases worldwide. Global Class Companies think differently. They are built around people with a specific mindset. They do things differently than legacy companies, and they use very different methods to do so. After extensive research with over 300 executives who have been involved in the international expansion of many companies, we have compiled best practices and tools to help your company become Global Class.

WHO are they made up of?

Global Class companies go to where the talent is. They build distributed teams, focusing on finding the right individuals instead of insisting on building remote offices with a large group of people all doing the same kinds of work. They find people with a strong combination of agile skills (being entrepreneurial), company skills (being an intrapreneur) to navigate the bureaucracy and processes of established organizations, and a global and culturally informed mindset (being an “interpreneur” with cultural EQ) to navigate the differences in culture but have the fortitude to tie local nuances to the global vision of the company.

WHAT do they do?

Global Class Companies localize. This doesn’t just mean language translation and considering culture in marketing campaigns; Global Class Companies adapt their whole business to fit local markets, while universalizing company core values and operational processes.

HOW do they do it?

This is the core purpose of the Global Class book - to show business leaders how to take the lessons from the world’s fastest growing companies and implement them within their own business. The robust frameworks, key insights and concept visualizations help you implement these best practices.

What makes Global Class Companies different?

Global Class Companies Think Global Day One. That doesn’t, however, mean they Go Global Day One. The companies who are successful on a global scale apply agile methodologies during expansion, attract the right people and adopt a key set of principle (the 4 Commitments to Global Growth and the 3 Pillars of Effective International Expansion, as outlined in the Global Class book)

Why now?

We are at a pivot point in business. The pandemic has changed the game. Global Business 1.0 is dead, giving rise to Global Business 2.0. Just like companies born before vs. after the dot-com boom think and act differently (those born after building companies with distinct advantages that disrupted legacy incumbents, history has shown), so will company born during and after the pandemic. Companies that attempt to grasp to pre-pandemic strategies will fail and those who adopt the Global Class mindset will succeed. As companies emerge from the pandemic, now is a perfect time to recalibrate and decide on the right path forward, key goals and strategies to achieve them.
